Kazatomprom Still Considering Jordan Investments

Kazatomprom continues to assess the possibility of investing in projects in Jordan, despite the escalating conflict in the Middle East involving Israel, the United States, Iran, and several Arab countries. This was revealed during the national uranium company’s conference call on its 2025 financial results.

“We are currently focused on analyzing production costs, as well as the type and method of extraction. And, of course, we are carefully taking into account the geopolitical situation and the conflict in the Middle East,” said Kazatomprom CEO Meirzhan Yussupov in response to a question from a qazba.kz correspondent.

According to him, the issue consists of two key aspects.

“First, whether we should enter the market will primarily depend on the economic feasibility of projects in the region. If it proves economically viable, we will then consider our options while taking into account the geopolitical situation. At this stage, we are analyzing all the pros and cons, but overall, if favorable and suitable conditions arise, we may proceed,” the top manager explained.

He also noted that Kazatomprom had previously considered projects in other parts of the world, far from the Middle East. Two years ago, the company explored opportunities for uranium exploration and mining in Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Tanzania, and Namibia.

Last summer, media reported that Kazatomprom planned to develop uranium deposits in Jordan. The company intended to establish a joint venture with Jordan Uranium Mining Company (JUMCO) by the end of 2026, with a 70% stake. Uranium reserves in Jordan were estimated at 42,000 tons. Kazatomprom was expected to conduct research and pilot production work to assess the recoverability and enrichment potential of uranium at these sites.

Earlier reports also indicated that a U.S. military base in Jordan had been attacked by Iran. The country borders Israel, which has complex relations with several neighboring states.
